This tunnel leads me into the tobacco fields north of our village. I speed through on my bicycle, ringing my bell, and soon I am into sunshine, a world of birds, brooks, meadows, insects, trees, light flickering through fluttering green leaves, bathing the bicycle path in shafts of golden light..........who am I kidding. In winter, on a day like today, everything is in hibernation. But...
...today I went to the city and visited the little shop where I can find lamb skins. It was closed, but the old man let me in and said, 'I am open for you.' I could have danced the tango with him--without falling down because his shop is so tiny and stuffed skywards with boxes, papers, odds-and-ends...and I found this wonderfully soft skin in shades of metal grey. Then just a short walk away I peeked into another little workshop--my Togoan contact, who keeps a tidy pile of wax cotton from West Africa and Indonesia--this piece spoke to me--from The Ivory Coast. Look at the sheen. The quality is remarkable.
